Dapanji 大盘鸡 @ Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe Chelmsford, MA Boston

just wanted to do a quick update on Gene’s Chinese Flatbread Cafe. ive written a full review for it before, if you havent read it before you should def check it out!!!

anyways, apparently gene’s has a secret menu that cant be found anywhere. on tuesdays and wednesdays, they are able to make this dapanji 大盘鸡 dish for you if you order a few days in advance. Dapanji is a popular Uyghur dish in Xinjiang, China. the main ingredients usually consist of chicken, potatoes, green peppers, onions, sichuan hot peppers, and most importantly, handmade noodles. doesnt the word ‘handmade noodles’ just hit the spot?!

i made a reservation a week in advance. he only makes dapanji that serves 5 people plus starting from $55. we only had three people, but oh well, cant stop us! we still got the 5 ppl portion.

when we got there our dapanji wasnt ready yet, i was starving to death, so i ordered the lamb stew as an ‘appetizer’ hehehehe.

on the right is their homemade sour plum drink 酸梅汤 – yes sour, but light and refreshing, i drank 2 of them.

so here comes the dapanji!

the handmade noodles are buried in the bottom of the dish, soaking all the sauces, oil, and all the good stuffff!! very al dente, firm, chewy, heavenly!

this dish is savory, spicy, or super spicy if your tolerance is low. my friend was sweating like crazy and he said his mouth was numb and couldnt taste anything after a while. gene’s is def my fave noodle place in MA and gene’s version of dapanji wasn’t bad at all. i enjoyed it although it wasnt china good yet. we were super stuffed at the end of our meal and we didnt even finish half of the dish, i could barely walk or breath.

the owner told me that they are testing out more dishes on the secret menu such as pork rib with buried handmade noodles.

so once again, if you wanna check out this dish, make sure you call in and make a reservation first. they will NOT make it for you without a reservation.

oh fyi, they will be closed next week, i believe from thursday til sunday or something, im sowwie i totally forgot the dates. please call in to make sure. chelmsford is pretty far, dont waste your gas!!!

LA Burdick Chocolate @ Back Bay Boston, MA

LA burdick has two stores in boston. one in Harvard sq and this one is in back bay. the back bay store just opened not long ago. if you are not familiar with their chocolate, everything is handmade. they import the best ingredients from fance switzerland, and venezuela. they dont use extracts, concentrates, or flavorings. all flavors come directly from their sources.

ive written a review on their chocolates before. i love them. super rich and smooth!

their macarons are only ok. a lil too hard for my liking.

this is actually the first ive had their iced chocolate drink. i got the dark chocolate drink. extremely rich. ive had hot chocolate in the winter, really thick and rich like you are drinking melted chocolate. you’d imagine the white chocolate drink would be super sweet right? no, it’s actually nice and light, like milk.

Bergamot @ Somerville, MA Boston

went to bergamot for din din last night. had a reservation for 8:30. went kayaking in the afternoon @ charles river. pork belly and i were STARVING when we got there. service was friendly but super slowwwww. it looks like they have plenty of wait staff, but we waited for an hour before our appetizers came. we ate a billion pieces of bread cuz we were soooo hungry.

House-Made Charcuterie – duck live mousse, some kinda meat thingy, and sausage. very yummmm

Grilled Oyster Mushrooms – Roasted Fairytale Eggplant, Cippolini Onions, Pickled Ginger Raita, Fried Rice
tasty. really liked the eggplant. mushroom was good as well.

Grilled Heritage Pork Loin Chop -Escarole, Roasted Golden Beets, Chanterelles, Peach Gastrique
tender and flavorful

zucchini tomato and feta cheese – im not a big fan of feta cheese, but pork belly loved it. basically he loves everything stinky.

Pan-Seared Striped Bass － New Orleans Oyster Stew, Grilled Yellow Tomato, Zucchini, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Corn
really liked the broth, very creamy

we did enjoy our meal at bergamot except the unbearably long wait. everything was good but nothing was mind blowing. pork belly liked more than i did. at the end of the meal i felt like i was getting hives from the dirty charles river water i wasn’t feeling well.

fyi, they do have a small parking lot to the left of the restaurant from the beacon st side. if full, there are plenty street parkings.

Food Truck: Kickass Cupcakes Boston, MA

i was sitting in LA burdick yesterday and saw the kickass cupcakes truck parked right outside of it so i had to go get one.

they recommended the chocolate ones but i jus had mad chocolate @ LA burdick so i picked the strawberry shortcake

man i really liked it, nice and light, creamy.

even had fillings inside.

they have a store in davis square in somerville and the cupcakes are more fresh at the store.

Tacos @ Taqueria Jalisco East Boston, MA Take 2

ive wrote a review for taqueira jalisco before claiming that they have the best tacos in boston. pork belly was in town this weekend, so i took him for a quick after dinner bite. yes, after dinner.

pork belly got two steak tacos. these were good, but chicken taco is still the best!

the sauces you can put in your taco.

i got a chicken taco.. ummm so gooooooood!

tostada de camaron – shrimp tostada. kinda sweet but yummmmmm. very refreshing for the summer!

flan – very good. i love how its not super sweet.

super super super supersupersupersupersuper friendly service. the lady still remembered me last time i came here for take-out jeje.

Ten Tables @ Jamaica Plain, MA Boston

went to ten tables for a dinner date with my gf today cuz we had something to celebrate last min. i thought reservations would be so hard to get, but i managed get a reservation this morning.

ten tables is another neighborhood joint that supports local food. we got there a lil early so we sat at the bar while our table was getting ready.

the dinning room:

riesling, decent, but wasnt impressive.

we opted for the tasting menu, very good deal.
chicken liver – im not a fan of chicken liver at all, but this was probably the best chicken liver ive had. it kinda tasted like pig liver instead of chicken. not bad at all.
the restaurant’s pretty dark. extremely challenging for me to take pix. food pix didnt come out well sowwie.

Hake and Shellfish Stew with Couscous, Cauliflower, San Marzano Tomatoes, Red Peppers and Golden Raisins
i liked it a lot. very light but flavorful. i always like soupy dishes. havent had cauliflower forever.

Adobo Rubbed All Natural Hanger Steak with Farro & Braised Kale

i liked the flavor, but the steak itself wasn’t so tender.

blackberry with vanilla stuff on the bottom + hazelnut cookie – i expected it to be really sour but it wasnt which is good. i like the combination. the hazelnut cookie was awesome!

i really liked the ambience; i felt really comfortable like i was sitting in my own house and probably intimate if i were on a real date. service was average and informative. although i had an enjoyable experience overall, but i think this is a lil overrated. so many ppl rave about this place it’s crazy. people tend to compare ten tables with Bondir, but i think this doesnt even compare. if i give bondir a 10, ten table probably gets a 7 or lower. i still like how the food here is nice and light tasting, but it’s not as well executed as Bondir. bondir is a lil more perfect in every small way.

Ebisuya Japanese Market @ Medford, MA Boston

ebisuya japanese market is 3 miles from where i live. they have a great selection of JDM groceries and sashimi grade fish and a sushi bar. they even have a good selection of JDM cosmetics and comic books. sushis are made to order at the sushi bar.

very reasonably priced. the fish is relatively fresh; however, the sushi is not so well made. the rice isnt firm; it would break apart when you pick it up. fish is kinda watery for some reason, possibly because they were frozen and the ice melted and caused the water in the fish. well, i still think it’s not bad at 2 bux each. all of these only cost $14 bux. if you just want a quick lunch, i wouldnt mind it.

grean tea shake @ $3.5. although i still prefer the one at Japonaise Bakery and Cafe, but this isn’t bad at all.

Desserts @ Max Brenner Back Bay Boston, MA

went to toraya @ arlington for din din again. since when i started drinking beer. smh. i need to stop otherwise my bunny belly will soon turn into pork belly.

pan fried beef tongue. decent.

sushi deluxe.

toraya didnt have any desserts today. i wanted to go to LA burdick but they close at 9pm, so we headed to max brenner in the back bay.

max brenner is alright. not the best, but def better than finale and i couldnt think of anything else at that moment.

hot mug- hot chocolate

the melting chocolate truffle heart cake & shake – Milk & white chocolate heart cake served with creamy vanilla ice cream, red berries and an iced milk chocolate shot

chocolate surprise tiramisu – espresso soaked ladyﬁngers, mascarpone cream, red berries & a layer of chocolate truﬄe
presentation is interesting, but it tasted alright.

chocolate fondue. supposedly with other fruits, but i only asked for strawberry.

max brenner is good for a quick dessert, but nothing too special. quality of chocolate is ok. not impressive though. i’d go to LA burdick for chocolates.
