Kung Fu Tea | Allston, MA Boston

the famous NY kung fu tea bubble tea joint opened in allston not long ago. it took me forever to pay a visit cuz i never liked their drinks from multiple locations in NYC.

porkbelly still insisted to check it out one night we were in allston.

IMG_1573

we were pretty satisfied with our drinks. we have been to kung fu tea four times so far. pork belly always got the herbal jelly green tea and i always got either the red wow milk tea or the green wow milk tea which is a milk tea with either sweet red or green beans. it’s extremely hard to get a good green tea milk tea (im not talking about matcha here) because the green tea flavor is too subtle and it’s hard to bring the flavors out. the only good green tea milk tea ive had is from unique tea house @ syracuse. kung fu tea’s green tea milk tea is a pretty close match.
IMG_2172

i was almost done with the drink and look how much red beans left on the bottom.
kf

although the drinks are pretty good, the service def needs a lot improvements. out of our 4 visits, they messed up on our order 3 times. pork belly asked for herbal jelly and he got boba instead one time. i asked for lil sugar and lil ice and i got full sugar and full ice.

kung fu tea is easily better than any of the tea joints in the area, but the last two visits we were there, the line was out of the door. it took 40 mins to get our drinks. i ran into 4 of my friends there so i was chatting w/ them otherwise i dont think i’d ever wait for 40 mins for kung fu tea.

they are opening kung fu tea location in chinatown which i walk by everyday. it’d be perfect for the summer !!!

Recipe: Flan in a Mug

IMG_5500

flan is one of my fave desserts. super sweet and unhealthy which makes it tastes so good! pork belly learned to how to make it yesterday and succeeded the 1st time. yay!

ingredients:
sugar
butter/spray
2 eggs
230 ml milk
condensed milk

we dont have legit baking containers, so we are just using mugs.
Untitled

1. coat inside the mug with a layer of butter, so it will be easier to remove the flan from the mug. you can use the spray as well.
Untitled

2. making the caramel: heat sugar and water on medium heat.
Untitled

3. wait til it turns brown color and remove it from the stove before it starts to burn.
Untitled

4. pour the caramel inside the mugs
Untitled

Untitled

5. beat the eggs
Untitled

6. heat the milk + condensed milk + sugar and mix them when it gets warm. dont let it boil. you only need the liquid to get warm so they can mix well together.
Untitled

7. pour the milk mixture into the bowl of eggs and mix mix mix. mix it really well.
if the milk mixture is too hot, wait til it to cool down before pouring, otherwise the milk will cook the egg and make it solid.
Untitled

8. pour the mixture into the mugs.
Untitled

Untitled

9. place the mugs with covers into the steamer. steam for about 20 mins after the water boiling.
Untitled

10. place the mugs in the fridge for it to cool down. i suggest to leave it overnight so it gets rid of the eggy taste. serve chilled
Untitled

tips:
1. you can also add vanilla extract into the milk mixture if you like vanilla flavor.
2. if the flan doesnt get solid after it’s steamed, that means the milk/egg ratio is off. too much milk and too a few eggs. the eggs make the flan solid.
3. if too eggy taste, leave in the fridge overnight. it ll get rid of the eggy taste.

hope you guys enjoy this recipe and let me know how it turns out for you!

LA burdick has two stores in boston. one in Harvard sq and this one is in back bay. the back bay store just opened not long ago. if you are not familiar with their chocolate, everything is handmade. they import the best ingredients from fance switzerland, and venezuela. they dont use extracts, concentrates, or flavorings. all flavors come directly from their sources.

super rich chocolate cake.

IMG_0025

this is actually the first ive had their iced chocolate drink. i got the dark chocolate drink. extremely rich. ive had hot chocolate in the winter, really thick and rich like you are drinking melted chocolate. you’d imagine the white chocolate drink would be super sweet right? no, it’s actually nice and light, like milk.

Ten Tables @ Jamaica Plain, MA Boston

went to ten tables for a dinner date with my gf today cuz we had something to celebrate last min. i thought reservations would be so hard to get, but i managed get a reservation this morning.

ten tables is another neighborhood joint that supports local food. we got there a lil early so we sat at the bar while our table was getting ready.

we opted for the tasting menu, very good deal.
chicken liver – im not a fan of chicken liver at all, but this was probably the best chicken liver ive had. it kinda tasted like pig liver instead of chicken. not bad at all.
the restaurant’s pretty dark. extremely challenging for me to take pix. food pix didnt come out well sowwie.

Hake and Shellfish Stew with Couscous, Cauliflower, San Marzano Tomatoes, Red Peppers and Golden Raisins
i liked it a lot. very light but flavorful. i always like soupy dishes. havent had cauliflower forever.

Adobo Rubbed All Natural Hanger Steak with Farro & Braised Kale

i liked the flavor, but the steak itself wasn’t so tender.

IMG_9435

blackberry with vanilla stuff on the bottom + hazelnut cookie – i expected it to be really sour but it wasnt which is good. i like the combination. the hazelnut cookie was awesome!

IMG_9463

i really liked the ambience; i felt really comfortable like i was sitting in my own house and probably intimate if i were on a real date. service was average and informative. although i had an enjoyable experience overall, but i think this is a lil overrated. so many ppl rave about this place it’s crazy. people tend to compare ten tables with Bondir, but i think this doesnt even compare. if i give bondir a 10, ten table probably gets a 7 or lower. i still like how the food here is nice and light tasting, but it’s not as well executed as Bondir. bondir is a lil more perfect in every small way.

Manji Dessert @ Flushing New York

IMG_8312

manji dessert is a chain in china. it’s probably one of my fave desserts place in beijing. i was so happy that i found out they have one in flushing new york. it’s located in the new world mall food court. although everything seems legit, but somehow it doesnt taste as good as the ones in beijing.

IMG_8258

杨枝甘露 - my fave thing ever. mango pomelo sago with or without the green tea ice cream. very rich mango-y. love it!

IMG_8284

i forgot what this was. some milky shaved ice with green tea ice cream. perfect for the hot summer.

Yakitori Totto @ Midtown West New York, NY

after those chuan’er that we had in flushing, we headed to yakitori totto to have more chuan’ers. ive been looking for good yakitori place because yakitori taisho was kinda disappointing. wanted to go to this place forever and we actually made a trip there before but it wasnt open.

they open at 5:30pm on sundays. we got there around 5:15 and were the first in line. all the staffs were smoking outside the restaurant. by the time they opened the line was already 10 deep.

i wasn’t a huge fan of this place because
1. altho everything was perfectly grilled and very tender, but i think the meat wasn’t too fresh.
2. the yakitori was kinda bland. i would like it with more flavors other than just salt and pepers. the taste of chicken gets boring after a while. everything tasted pretty much the same. i wish they were marinated to give it more flavors.

the good: yakitori totto is relatively cheap comparing to other places.

man i really wish Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori is on the east coast, id go there everyday! the search for good yakitori continues…
