Kickass Cupcakes | Davis Square Somerville Boston, MA

so many new food trucks jus recently hit the roads of boston. Kickass Cupcakes food truck has been around for a while now. some time last fall, i checked out their actual store in davis square somerville.

mochiatto- Chocolate cupcake with a caramel center, mocha frosting topped with chocolate covered espresso beans

the Lucky Cupcake - Luscious lemon cupcake with white chocolate buttercream and candied ginger, comes with a fortune

S’MORES- Graham cracker cupcake with chocolate ganache and a toasted vanilla bean marshmallow

SUPER CHOCOLATE -Chocolate brownie cupcake topped with bittersweet chocolate ganache and chocolate shavings

i dont remember how exactly each one tasted but i do remember i did like all of them. i bought these to share with 2 of my friends, but i ended up eating all 4 of them myself and refused to share because i liked them so much.

i dont know how they’ve got some really terrible reviews on yelp, but out of all of the cupcakes ive tried in boston, i like kickass cupcakes the best. they are not the best looking cupcakes and def not cheap for the price, but i still enjoyed them a lot. my last visit was last fall tho, maybe they are not as good as used to be? you ll have to find out yourself.

Cupcakes @ Pink Tree Sweets Andover, MA

pink tree sweets is a new cupcake joint located in downtown andover, ma. the store’s beautifully decorated. looks like a new sweet hangout spot in the neighborhood.

i like when cupcakes have fillings! i really liked this matcha mochi cupcake, very creamy and soft.

in addition to cupcakes, they also sell bubble teas.

French Macarons @ Bisous Ciao New York, NY

checked out bisous ciao couple months ago on the lower east side when i was in new york city.

its been a while since i visited so my memory is so vague now. i remember they were being generally decent, nothing mind blowing tho. they do have some interesting flavors such as:
pistachio – white chocolate pistachio ganache
gianduja – the classic mix of hazelnut and milk chocolate
yuzu- yuzu cream with a yuzu marmalade center
jasmine + green tea – jasmine infused white chocolate ganache
lavender + honey – lavender + honey flavored buttercream
mandarin and wasabi – mandarin was too strong, couldnt taste the wasabi at all.

Hungry Mother & Tatte Fine Cookies & Cakes @ Kendall Square/MIT Cambridge, MA Boston

a friend of mine recently moved to kendall square area so we decided to explore the dinning scene around the area. i picked hungry mother for din din last sunday; was able to get a same day reservation on opentable.

parking wasnt too hard to find, but they do offer validated parking at kendall square cinema garage.

hungry mother consists of three dinning rooms. the room we dined in didnt have much decorations, but i did like the ambience: quiet, intimate.

hungry mother does change their menu a lot. they get the ingredients from farms in and around new english. everything is pretty much made in house.

crispy antebellum grits, beets, wild mushrooms, pickled ramps, sorrel & leek soubise

smoked beef tongue on toast, robinson swiss cheese, dijon, gremolata – bbq flavor, super tender beef tongue, very yum!

pickled florida gulf shrimp, avocado spread – delish

fried chicken

sausage

french gnocchi – flavorful, awesome texture, but a bit salty.

i basically loved/liked everything we ordered. everything was very flavorful and well executed; did live up to the hype! we were pretty full after dinner, but next time i ll def try their desserts! one year it was rated as ’10 best american restaurants in the america’. they offer $8 tickets to kendal square cinema if you dine at hungry mother. would be a great date night.

ive been getting a lot questions about my camera and my secrets of taking photos in restaurant/low light settings. yes it is super hard to take good photos at low light settings. most of the time lighting is even nonexistent. this is when a dslr would really make a difference. a decent dslr + low aperture will allow you to take sharp photos at low light settings, but most importantly it’s the magic of photoshop!!!

below is a comparison of two photos, left one straight from the camera and right one after photoshopped. wow i know hehe

Food Truck: Kickass Cupcakes Boston, MA

i was sitting in LA burdick yesterday and saw the kickass cupcakes truck parked right outside of it so i had to go get one.

they recommended the chocolate ones but i jus had mad chocolate @ LA burdick so i picked the strawberry shortcake

man i really liked it, nice and light, creamy.

even had fillings inside.

they have a store in davis square in somerville and the cupcakes are more fresh at the store.

Memorial Day Weekend @ Virginia & Washington, DC pix heavy

i visited pork belly last weekend in virginia. we had such a great ‘outdoor’ weekend.

saturday we went to the national zoo in DC. we took the train instead of driving there. DC has the creepiest subway ever. so dark and creepy.

the zoo is FREE just like other museums in DC

perhaps because it is free. there arent so many animals in the zoo.

there are two pandas: tian tian and mei xiang. this is the first time ive ever since a live non-sleeping panda super close. w00t! the pandas were both eating bamboos. i really think their main meals are not bamboos but meat instead. how can they only eat bamboos and get that fat. they are aggressive diners.

some panda porn. they tried to reproduce on their own but couldnt get pregnant

this might be the 1st time ive seen a live owl.

after the zoo, we headed to sweet lobby. although pork belly bought sweet lobby for me a few times, i hadnt been to their real store yet.

the store is so tiny. im sorta on a diet so we just got couple things and ate on the spot. the cupcakes were so good when they were fresh.

after sweet lobby we headed to georgetown. we rented two bikes and biked around.

look what i got lol….. i also bought a bubble bar from lush.

we had dinner @ chasin tails crawfish in arlington and watched the celtics vs. 76ers game 7. the food that night wasnt so good and fresh and the waiter was super slow. meh i don’t know if i will return again.

Sunday

we went to Shilla to get some bingsoo and bubble tea after hot pot lunch @ Mala Tang

the green tea bingsoo is a beast. sooo goooddd omg!! the one @ pc cafe in boston is nothing but trash comparing to this.

the shaved ice is so fine + super delish green tea ice cream + mochi + yummy red bean

the pink bubble tea is guava flavored. tasted horrible it went straight to trash.

after yummy bingsoo its time for some biking. pork belly took me to the The Washington and Old Dominion Trail

Monday

after korean bbq @ honey pig we went to h mart next door to grab some snacks.

pork belly picked up this cuz he thought the expression of the chicken made this looked super good and spicy, but it turned out to be the opposite.

after h mart we went to our fave dessert place again – shilla

i couldnt resist sampling their bread/bakery. omg so good. heavenly good. i was in paradise.

we also went to hahaPink for sticker photos <3

after i was super stuffed from sampling all the bread, we headed to great falls park for hiking.

after hiking we drove back to reston center. i got a cupcake from red velvet cupcakery. they only had two flavors left. this chocolate one and carrot cupcake. i hate carrot cake so i didnt have a choice. it was good but nothing so special about it.

also went to Pilango Gelato for some gelato. i got the passion fruit flavor. soooooo goood and refreshingly deflish!!!!! loved loved it!

pork belly was hungry at this point, so he got a beacon burger and cajun fries from five guys. i couldnt resist so i ate half of the fries of course.

thanks to pork belly i had a such fun weekend. i love you <3

Mitsuwa Marketplace NJ + Golden Shopping Mall + New World Mall Food Court @ Flushing Queens, NY

Saturday, i went to new york to pick up my ‘new’ car and meet up with pork belly.

every time we are in new york or new jersey we have to stop by mitsuwa. it’s the largest japanese supermarket in the U.S. we love this place. good and cheap food. JDM groceries, cosmetics, magazines, toys!!

every saturday they have something different that they sell in the food court. this time they were selling these mochi stuff.

jdm chocolate candies, cosmetics, hair products, vivi magazine, and pork belly’s sexy leg!

i love hada labo products, so cheap and so good! hada labo masks are probably the best masks ive ever used besides sk-II. ya but sk-ii is 10 times the price.

next top we went to flushing aka my fave spot on this land! driving to flushing is so much easier than taking the subway! plenty of parking garages. we stayed about 3 hrs and it was only 10 bux.

right after we parked our cart. we spotted this chuan er place!!! chuan ers from flushing are even better than the ones from beijing. the meat is super juicy!! i guess they use better meat here. i freakin love love this bbq lamb/beef/chicken cart!!!!

next stop, we went to the xi’an famous foods @ golden shopping mall which Anthony Bourdain went to.
the golden shopping mall food court is in the basement. pretty ghetto and smelly, but i ll suck it up for the good food.

we got the famous lamb burger which they made on the spot.

me + lamb burger. the lamb burger is different than what i had in china. it is very oily but super flavorful. the meat is super juicy and tender! like x 10000

we wanted to try their noodles, but we were getting too full after mitsuwa and lamb chuan ers. we still wanted to go to the new world mall for more food.

on the way to new world mall food court, i saw a shop that sold chestnuts! my fave snack in beijing! i love chestnuts!!!!

considering it is not in season for chestnuts, these are pretty sweet!!!

we arrived to the new world mall food court with a full stomach. it is much cleaner than the golden shopping mall. much more pleasant dinning environment.

we saw a lady was making soup dumplings, so we decided to try some. we ordered the crab meat flavored soup dumplings.

FAIL. too big, too greasy. no good.

last time we had kong fu cha, i didnt like it so we decided to try a new place this time. i got the regular milk tea to be safe. they were buy one get one free, but too good to be true. it tasted pretty bad. super sweet and artificial flavored. FAIL

we also got the hand-pull noodles. hand-pull noodles with lamb soup. meh i dont know if we were too full so it didnt taste good or it’s just not so good. the soup was rather bland and the noodles did not taste as chew considering its hand pulled.

the most horrifying thing was i saw hair on a piece of lamb or pork skin. that totally freaked me out and killed my entire appetite. ive never seen hair on meat skin in my food before. that was disgusting.

lastly, i got my fave mango dessert from my fave dessert spot, man ji desserts! sooo goood!

pork belly and i both got diarrhea after our trip. we wonder which food we ate that made us sick.

Online Ordered French Macarons from Macaron Cafe New York

pork belly ordered me some macarons from macaron cafe because there arent a lot of places that sell macarons in boston. we have searched a lot of place online and the macaron cafe from new york looks the best and have relatively low shipping rate. the bad thing about ordering food online is the shipping cost since they have to be shipped thru overnight or same day shipping. the shipping cost can be as much as the cost of the food itself or even more.

macaron cafe has a decent selection of flavors. since it’s been a while, i cannot remember what exactly they taste like. i just remember they didnt wow me but they didnt taste bad either.

if you can’t get macarons anywhere else, i’d give this place a try.

fyi, macarons taste the best at room temperature. they need to be refrigerated if you are not eating them. once you get them out of the fridge, wait 15-20 mins so they are at room temperature.
