The Most Traditional/Authentic Peking Roast Duck @ Quanjude Beijing, China

i was born in beijing, china, so i have been eating all kinds of beijing roast duck all throughout my life. peking duck has been around since the imperial era and now its considered one of china’a national food. you can find roast duck everywhere in china; prices ranging from as lil as $9 to $50 per duck.
quanjude is a most famous restaurant for the peking roast duck. it was established in 1864 during the Qing Dynasty. i believe there are only about real 8 quanjudes in beijing, but just like other knocked off things in china, you probably can find hundreds of fake quanjudes in town.

the first quanjude is located in qianmen which i have been to couple times when i was little. this quanjude that we went to is located in wangjing.
we ordered a set of meal for 10 people which includes their signature dishes. most of the dishes are made from parts of a duck (liver, stomach, heart, meat, head, etc.).

we had a private room which was well decorated.

i forgot what this is. perhaps duck meat with duck egg yolk.

sweet ribs.

duck liver.

sweet and spicy duck shredded meat?

mushrooms

duck heart?

tofu w/shrimp and mushroom

here comes the duck. the duck is meant to be eaten with sweet bean sauce and spring onions (as pictures) wrapped in pancake.

sea cucumber

chicken (pork belly loves this stuff)

beef

the duck is carved in front of us and served in 3 stages. 1. the skin is served dipped in sugar. it just melts in your mouth. 2. the meat is served with steamed pancakes, spring onions and sweet bean sause. 3. the bone and other leftover on the duck can be made into soup or stir fried. you are also welcomed to take it food to feed your pets if you wish. there is usually a lot of meat left on the duck.

traditional desserts of beijing.

quanjude is very clean and serves traditional peking duck. although their duck is amazing and one of the best, i wouldnt say there is no other place can beat them. i go to da dong a lot for peking duck. da dong’s ducks are jus as fantastic if not better. they also serve a lot of other food which are more interesting than quanju de. if you are looking for a traditional peking duck experience i would recommend you this place, otherwise da dong is also worth to check out!

Brunch @ Shangri-la Boston, Belmont, MA

pork belly and i came to shangri-la for lunch saturday. we were very excited abt it after reading good reviews about this place. the place was packed and we had to wait outside for about 30 mins.
man, i hate places that arent even that good and you have to wait in line for!
this is one of them!!
when i saw their menu, the stuff looked so americanized. a lot of rice plates and pork chop?!
ok so we went with the beef noodle and beef pancakes that other ppl raved about.

beef pancake. this was ok. the one from Chung Shin Yuan was wayyyyy better as i remembered.
they give a lot of meat. the ‘pancake’ is crispy, but lack of flavors i guess. and the shell was a lil bit hard.

the beef noodle soup was mehhh. the soup was good and flavorful but salty. they gave a lot of meat which was good. the meat’s tender. BUT how can you sell noodle soup without handmade noodle!!!! why would i eat noodle in a restaurant if it is the same cheap low-quality noodle that you can buy from any chinese super market?! the noodle was garbage. it’s ‘gua mian’! soggy and not chewy! any place in china that sells noodle has handmade noodles even the most ghetto places. who eats ‘gua mian’ nowadays. even my dad makes his own noodles!!!!
urggg

pork belly w/his beefu noodle soup

‘you tiao’ – im not too cray about this. pork belly likes them so he ordered one. ppl like to dip this in soy bean milk. i also hate chinese soy bean milk. the soy bean taste is too strong! dislike.

this place was average, but no way im gonna wait 30 mins outside for this jank.
don’t think i will return.

this place gets 3/5 pork belly

Lonely Takeout @ Sichuan FuLoon Restaurant Malden, MA

****** i no longer come here after my last visit to fuloon last month. the food was garbage, surprisingly not fresh. the meat tasted very old and weird. ******

fuloon is my to go takeout spot besides dominos. their food is pretty decent and somewhat authentic chinese food. i was super hungry tonite and my mom wasnt home so i ordered food from fuloon.

spicy sichuan chicken – pork belly loves loves this dish. he must get this whenever we order food from fuloon.
this is the most authentic spicy sichuan chicken in boston i can find and i have been to pretty much all sichuan restaurants in boston.
tonite it tasted extra spicy.

green beans – i got the non meat version tonight which i didnt like.

food tonite did not taste as good as usual. they took a long time to deliver my food, so my food wasnt so nice and hot anymore. or maybe its jus because pork belly wasnt eating with me :(

good nite.

Soup Dumplings @ Shanghai Gate Allston/Brighton Boston, MA

pork belly and i went to shanghai gate for din din last night. we come here pretty often and we love it!!! it is pretty authentic shanghai food even my friend from shanghai agrees!

we got the regulars:
i have no idea what is this called. i do not think it is on the menu. when i order it i just say the orange beef that comes with the buns.

it is so my favorite dish from shanghai gate! extremely good to eat with the bun!!! there it is with the bun:

the fishy with extra spicy sauce:

very very good to eat with rice!!!!

of course the famous soup dumplings from shanghai! nice and small which how they are supposed to be. not super greasy! taste just right. they are still nothing close to the soup dumplings i had in shanghai, but better than joe’s shanghai for sure!!!

people rave about joe’s shanghai from new york city, but when i went there, it’s soooooo badddd!! the soup dumplings were HUGE!! like buns!! and super greasy. man i thought i was drinking oil straight up. that place is so hyped! well, i went to the one in chinatown, maybe the one in flushing is better? i dont think im even curious to give it try after i had it in chinatown. worst soup dumplings ever had!

shanghai gate is pretty small, so you always have to wait for tables if you come on weekends and some nights. it is family style. the food comes out quickly.
this place gets 4.5/5 bunny belly.

New World Mall Food Court @ Flushing Queens, NY

last weekend, pork belly and i went to NYC to watch a knicks game. (yea they suck). we heard flushing has super authentic chinese food, so we headed over there. after a mil of transfers and 2+ hours train ride (due to constructions) we finally arrived to flushing!!!
the food court:

the new world mall food court was pretty awesome. they had a huge selection of chinese food. they were all pretty authentic. we were so physched and wanted to try everything, but since pork belly and i have been on diet recently, our belly filled up quickly.

we love ma la (spicy) xiang guo (pot). so we had this

happy pork belly :)

it was so goooood. def comparable to the ones in china! highly recommended.

we were also looking for some shan xi bun + beef, but couldnt find it so we settled for this tian jin joint. it tastes better than it looks. loved it!

after we had ma la xiang guo, i couldnt wait for some desserts because i saw man ji desserts. man ji desserts is a chain in china. it’s so good.

i got yang zhi gan lu (mango + orange thingy). super rich mango taste!!! must try!! love it!!

and this milky icey + mango + sticky rice thingy.

we also got green tea with milk from kung fu tea place. wasn’t good.

after we left the food court, we saw this chuan er xiang jiang bbq cart on the corner of the street. although pork belly and bunny belly were super full already, we got 2 anyways but you just cant pass on that.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! this is freaking amazing! this lamb chuan er is evenn better than the average chuan er in beijing!!!!!! the meat is so juicyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh man, flushing is freaking heaven when it comes to authentic chinese food!!!!!!!!!! they have very similar food courts in vacouver when i visited last winter. im so glad that i found another not too far from boston. pork belly and i were super satisfied. we can’t wait to go back again!
