Toraya @ Arlington, MA Boston

a friend of mine recommended toraya to me a few weeks ago. i finally got a chance to check it out tonight.

the restaurant is small. we had to wait for like 10 mins on a friday night which wasnt bad at all.

we sat at the sushi bar yay. their menu look very simple and authentic. they dont serve crazy americanized maki-rolls which i dont like much anyways. when it comes to sushi, i just like simple fresh well prepared nigiri. i’d rather not eat them with soy sauce unless the fish isnt fresh enough to eat alone.

District Taco @ Arlington, VA / Taco Truck

pork belly took me to district taco last weekend. they started with a food truck and now have grown into restaurants at multiple locations in and around VA and DC area.

pork

steak

chicken

i liked these tacos a lot! so tasty, bold, flavorful, and spicy. although the meat couldve been better, the ingredients were super fresh as they claim that they are made from scratch each day. the only complain i had was the tortillas were flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas. i just checked out their online menu it says:

‘Tacos
On flour tortilla. Corn tortillas available upon request’

i guess i did not see that in the restaurant. remember to ask for corn tortillas if thats what you prefer.

these still cant beat the taco trucks in LA, but i am satisfied. cant ask for more.

Sichuan Chengdu Hot Pot / Shabu @ Mala Tang Arlington, VA

we have been to uncle liu’s hot pot restaurant a few times and i love the spicy hot pot broth @ uncle liu’s. probably the most authentic ma la spicy broth ive had on the east coast. the only turn off is the meat @ uncle liu’s. not tender and high quality meat. one day we saw mala tang on livingsocial. mala tang and uncle liu’s have the same owner except mala tang is the fancier version of uncle liu’s, so we wanted to give mala tang a try and hoped that they have better meat @ mala tang.

we went to mala tang for lunch last saturday. the place is pretty good. very well decorated for a chinese restaurant. we were the ONLY people there except another couple.

i ordered chengdu cold noodles. this was ok. flavors were off. not as spicy and delish as what ive had in chengdu.

chengdu dumplings. this was so off. nothing like the real zhong shuijiao, but it didnt taste bad.

they have the small personal pot for hot pot. it sort looks like shabu shabu. the broth was bland. uncle liu’s broth was way spicier, numb, and flavorful!

i love the sesame sauce, but not a lot of places have it in america. this tasted a bit sour :T

scam no. 1: i ordered the surf and turf meal which comes with meat and seafood of your choice and a combo of veggies. i chose veggie combo #1 because it has lotus roots on the menu, but when they brought the veggies i did NOT see any lotus roots. i asked our waitress why she said they did not have it. ok this is not acceptable. why didn’t she inform me that they did not have it when i placed the order?!

scam no. 2: you can choose either noodles, rice, or vermicelli. she did not ask me what i wanted; she just brought rice to me. who eats rice with hot pot?! i asked her if i could have vermicelli; she said no because that would be extra $4. wtf it says right in the menu that i get to choose.

scam no. 3: the meat – bad quality meat with veggies stuffed in the bottom to make the plate looks fuller.

ive always always been skeptical about restaurants on livingsocial or groupon. if the restaurants are good, they do not need to advertise on such sites. this proved me im right again.

Crawfish and Seafood @ The Boiling Crab Los Angeles, CA

pork belly’s friend took us to the boiling crab last spring break when we visited cali. i forgot which location we went to but it was a long wait. the wait was worth it because i def enjoyed the food there.
this place is probably the most original Cajun crawfish place before everybody tries to copy their concept and open their own version of boiling crab.
i forgot what this was:

we ordered the whole SHABANG sauce. very bold and flavorful! very yummy

the flavor was so strong that my fingers still smelled like the sauce for 2 days.

bib time yay

i absolute love this place and ive found an alternative ‘the boiling crab’ wannabe in virginia.

Crawfish @ Chasin’ Tails Crawfish Arlington, VA Alternative to the Boiling Crab

when pork belly and i visited cali last year we loved the boiling crab there; we have been looking for an alternative to the boiling crab around VA and MA ever since. we have tried the Hot N Juicy Crawfish in DC but it was iight. the crawfish was wayy too small and the taste wasnt cutting it.
this louisiana crawfish and seafood joint just opened in arlington so pork belly and i decided to go for a visit.
we ordered the bayou catch special which consists of crawfish, clams, mussels, shrimps, snow crab legs, corns, potatoes, and andouille sausages. we ordered it with the whole shebang sauce and hot. they also have whole shebang @ the boiling crab.

i liked the shrimps a lot. they are nice and big. the crawfish was good too. well cleaned and not sandy. i didnt really like the snow crab legs. wayyy too salty. corns and potatoes were yummmm.

the whole shebang sauce was really salty. i had six glasses of coke and felt nauseous afterwards.

ask for a bib cuz the sauce and juice will get everywhere. it would be a messy meal so please dont come here for first dates.

the service was really good. the waitress kept bring me refills of coke without me even asking for it.

Thai Food @ Bangkok 54 Arlington, VA

pork belly aka the best bf eversu’s sis is getting married tmr. we came to bangkok 54 for din din after rehearsal today.

the food was above average i’d say. well decorated although it looks kinda ghetto from outside.

i had a glass of riesling at the bar while waiting the group to arrive. didnt like it. i also had thai iced tea but it was too sweet and i could barely taste the tea.

the menu for our group:

calamari: where is the salt and pepper as described?

tum yum: i hate when all the lemongrass or all the herbs are still in the soup. i had to spit them out arggg. besides that it tastes normal.

duck curry: fave dish of the night. bold and flavorful.

shrimp pad thai: this was below average. tasted weird to me

pad cha from the sea: a bit too spicy and salty.. in a bad way.

snow peas: yay greens
