Restaurant Orange Julep Gibeau and Smoked Meat @ Schwartz’s Montreal, QC Canada

we drove by Restaurant Orange Julep Gibeau from our hotel to downtown everyday. there is always a line, so i decided to check it out.
they are famous for their freshly squeezed trademark orange drink, Gibeau Orange Julep. it’s also a fast food restaurant. i saw a lot poutines on the menu.

IMG_3315

it tastes sweet. sweeter than normal orange juice. i actually liked it a lot.

all the entrees choices looked amazing. i just couldnt pass on paella tho.

paella barroco – lobster, shrimp, fresh scallop, morcilla, chorizo, tomatoes, red peppers, green peas & saffron
i did enjoy this a lot, but i believe this wasnt the best paella ive ever had. the rice was a lil undercooked and dry.

Au Pied de Cochon @ Montréal, QC

i went to montreal labor weekend for my friend’s biirfuday. we had an epic time there which involved with heavyyyy drinking, major lack of sleep, and hangover and result of that -> lost of appetite.

we made a reservation for au pied de cochon a month in advance and still got a 10:30pm reservation for sunday. i was dying to go there cuz it was featured on one of the anthony bourdain shows. being the first meal of the day at 10:30pm, i was still not hungry. the meal was supposed be super heavy, but because of my hangover, i could only eat a lil bit of it before i started to feel nauseous. bummmmer :’(

i still did enjoy the meal a lot, i would have enjoyed it even more if i werent in a such bad condition tho.

ok without further ado lets see what au pied de cochon is all about.

the restaurant was still mad packed when we arrived at 10:30pm on a sunday night. this pic was taken at 12:30am when we were leaving.

au pied de cochon is heavy on foie gras, but none of us is too crazy abt it so we ordered the foie gras poutine.

Foie Gras Poutine – this was soooo yummm. im not a huge fan of foie gras, but it was soo goood i had like 4 pieces of foie gras.

IMG_3176

IMG_3168

Pickled Tongue – i think this was the best beef tongue ive ever had. zero gameyness, super tender, well flavored, good texture.

IMG_3196

beef tartare – i love all kinds raw meat, but i didnt like this. i didnt like how its marinated. i think like the strong alcohol taste. very gamey as well.
IMG_3275

one of the special of the day – shepherd’s pie. of course they would have shepherd’s pie for special on sunday night. you’d know what i meant if you read anthony bourdain’s book. anyways, we did enjoy this a lot.
IMG_3250

duck in a can
au2-2

1/2 magret (breasts), 100g foie gras, 60 ml glace de viande au balsmque (meat), 180 ml d’embeurree de chou (buttered cabbage), 1/2 tete d’ail roti (roasted garlic),  2 branches de thym

ohhhh look at all that fatttt. the duck wasnt ducky at all which i liked. it’s jus tooooo oily for me to eat it so i only had couple bites.

IMG_3221

ugh i hate blurrrry pic
IMG_3236-2

chilled TOMATO SOUP… roasted garlic – this was weird. more like salsa than soup. i ate it like a dipping sauce with my bread.
IMG_2480

TEAMED MUSSELS… angel hair pasta, spicy slow roasted tomatoes, aioli
shouldve listened to anthony bourdain this time. sandy and very NOT fresh mussels. wtf really? im kinda upset at this point.
dirty utensils + not fresh food = my 2 biggest pet peeves! i dun even care if food tastes bad as long as its fresh.
it is jus NOT acceptable when the food is not fresh. way to go rialto!
IMG_2490

CATALAN SEAFOOD STEW… shrimp, mussels, clams, lobster, Romesco, chick peas, nuts
WRONG choice again. NOT FRESH!
IMG_2522

BBQ PORK TENDERLOIN… polenta, grapes, spinach, maple syrup
this was the only somewhat enjoyable dish of the night. pork was very tender. enjoyed the flavor as well.
IMG_2530

CHOCOLATE CRÈME BRULEE… chocolate dipped graham cookie and marshmallow
very burned. dislike
IMG_2538

rialto failed miserably. dirty utensils, not fresh bad tasting food, burned desserts, extremely slow service. can it be any worse? this was a terrible dinner. will NOT return ever again.

you can either order a la carte, each nigiri and sashimi dish consists of two pieces. they also have an omakase chef’s tasting menu which costs $275 per person. or you can get the chef’s tasting menu which all the stuff come from the a la carte menu. i also heard you can set a price that you would like to spend and they can make it work for you. if you have no idea what to order, just trust the staff and let them pick for you!

we opted for the chef’s tasting menu. i did some research before going there (of course) and there were a few things i really really wanted to try. i told our waiter and he made sure that we got those specific dishes that i wanted. they do have beef and other stuff besides sushi, but i asked for all nigiri and sashimi dishes. our waiter marked down every dish that we got. super nice of him! i also got a autograph of guchi san. bammmm

those that know me or read my blog probably know that i have oyster-phobia. ive had oysters long ago and i couldnt stand the texture and taste of it so i had to spit it out. ever since then ive been so scared of oysters so i never eat them.
i knew i was gonna get this oyster dish as the first dish accoriding to my research. i was kinda mentally prepared but i still struggled when it was right in front of my face. i manned up and wolfed it down my throat. omgggg i did it! first oyster ive ever swallowed. it didnt taste bad at all. i actually kinda enjoyed it!
