Dim Sum @ Sun Kong Malden, MA Boston

sun kong is literally down the street from where i live. pork belly loves dim sum, so sometimes we are too lazy to go to hei la moon in chinatown we come to sun kong. sun kong is pretty busy on weekends. if you come during lunch time, its guaranteed a wait. parking is way better than chinatown. they have a private lot in the back, but it does get full quickly. i can always find a spot to squeeze my car somewhere tho.

IMG_8062

honestly, the dim sum isn’t bad, not as good as hei la moon, but def better than winsor dim sum cafe in chinatown.

DO NOT EVER COME HERE FOR TAKE OUT THO. ive gotten takeout from here twice since i stopped going to Fuloon because the quality of their food is really bad nowadays. 1st time i got bitter melon with chicken, it’s not on the menu. so they totally ripped me off. i think i paid $12 for that. a lunch portion entree with rice from a chinese restaurant really?! that’s not the worst part yet. i specifically asked for chicken and repeated myself that i want chicken! 鸡!when i got home i found out they gave me pork instead! what if im muslim?! they totally don’t give a shit about their customers and food. im not even gonna mention how bad it tasted. 2nd time, i ordered beef broccoli. cant be any simpler than beef broccoli right? i thought i couldnt go wrong with beef broccoli right? im totally WRONG. they gave me chinese broccoli! really? even panda express knows how to make beef broccoli. the chinese broccoli was hard like grass. the beef was low quality meat. sun kong, why you make my life way harder than it already is. that’s it. wont ever return for anything other than dim sum.

ok enough trash talking. back on the dim sum

we usually eat a lot more than this but we were trying to save our stomach so we can eat more in NYC. one time we spent $90 on dim sum. just two of us. thats enough to eat 2 families. yea we are pigs.

Cafe St Petersburg @ Newton Center, MA Boston Russian

my friend’s bf just moved to boston from toronto and pork belly was in town this past weekend. we all went out together, our very first triple date. its amazing how life can change so much within a year. last year around this time we three girls were all at our down point of our relationships, but now we all found/re-found the person that we wanna share our lives with…. except pork belly is still so far away. life still isnt perfect yet, but we are working on it.

cafe st petersburg is really hard to find. it was pouring outside which made it even harder to find.

IMG_7702

this restaurant isnt busy at all. very spacious and well decorated.

this was kinda weird. i didnt really like it.
IMG_7892

Vegetarian Borscht
IMG_7906

Boneless Duck Breast- Prepared in traditional spices, garnished in a sweet black currant brandy sauce and sliced apples. the duck is relatively tender and not so strong ducky taste.
IMG_7914

IMG_7926

Chicken Kiev- Chicken breast stuffed with herbs and butter, breaded and deep fried
IMG_7929

Chicken Schnittzel- Breaded chicken breast cutlet cooked to perfection with a tint of white wine
this was my fave one. tender chicken, very well fried. subtle flavor without being bland.

very tender
IMG_7961

Lamb Shashlik – Marinated Lamb on skewers served with side dish
lamb wasnt so tender, but overall wasnt too bad.

French Macarons @ Ladurée Upper East Side New York, NY

IMG_8357

IMG_8320

i’ve gotten macarons from Ladurée as gifts a few times before, but this is actually my 1st time buying macarons from Ladurée myself. (oh, actually no, i made pork belly pay for it jeje). this store is very touristy, long wait, well jus like other stores in manhattan.

IMG_8324IMG_8328

if you are not familiar with Ladurée, it’s one of the most famous/best in the world. they are directly shipped from paris. i can’t tell you if it’s the best cuz i havent had a chance to try pierre hermé yet, but from all the macarons ive tried, laurée def makes the most perfect macaron. perfect texture, sweetness. moist, melts in your mouth. the almond power/flour taste isnt overwhelming. HOWEVER, i do find the flavors of their macarons a little boring. macarons are not supposed to be chewy, but i do like some chewy macarons. hey, it’s my stomach, i make the rules.

IMG_8332

IMG_8336

IMG_8347

when i got macarons from ladurée as gifts, they all came with these fancy boxes, but i didnt know these boxes cost extra money. if you only buy a few pieces and do not wanna pay these fancy boxes, they only give u a paper bag. macarons are so delicate i dont think its a good idea unless you are gonna eat them on the spot. they do give u a free box if you buy 8 pieces which i did. $2.7 a piece.

Oleana Restaurant @ Inman Square Cambridge, MA Boston

today we went to oleana to see what the hype is all about.
IMG_7436

they serve mediterranean dishes. when i think about mediterranean food i think of exotic spices with richness, depth, and bold flavors.

IMG_7437

IMG_7442

they have a wine list with an emphasis on riesling that i was super excited about. pork belly did not want to drink so i only got a glass by myself :’(
i believe i had -> 10 Riesling Spätlese, Selbach-Oster ‘Zeltinger Schlossberg,’ Mosel, Germany
it was disappointing, not smooth enough.
IMG_7444IMG_7456

IMG_7465

IMG_7468

i loved the fresh olive oil and the bread below this pic.
IMG_7488

IMG_7550

Warm Buttered Hummus with Basturma & Tomato – this was good. the hummus tasted buttery
IMG_7505

scallops- cucumber and cantaloupe. this was one of the specials of the night. my fave dish of the night. the spices were nice without being overwhelming. refreshingly delish.
IMG_7520

IMG_7555

another special of the night. duck breast with eggplant. the duck had really strong ducky taste that im not a big fan of and it was not tender enough. the flavor of eggplant was good.
IMG_7584

Tamarack Tunis Lamb with Turkish Spices, Pita & Everything Green with Garlic and Yogurt
the lamb wasnt real lamb meat, it’s like ground meat. i thought it was only ok.
IMG_7604

Baked Alaska; Coconut Ice Cream & Passion Fruit Caramel
this is their popular dessert that everyone raves about. i liked the first a few bites, but the sweetness become too overwhelming after the first bites. we could not finish it.
IMG_7632IMG_7644

although i did enjoy the two appetizers, the two entrees were disappointing. i think if i ever come back again i will get nothing but all appetizers. they are also famous for their vegetarian tasting menu, but i love meat too much to have that.

overall it was a good meal but nothing really to rave about.

i can see why this place is so popular. americans like exotic spices and flavors that this restaurant offers since american food is so lame, but i was raised eating chinese food which also has bold flavors and tons spices so this did not wow me. the entrees were not well executed. like the duck didnt carry out the flavors of the spices they used. they could work more on the texture and the tenderness of the meat or maybe overall simplicity of the flavors and basics of the food itself. (i know i do not make sense at all. never mind)

service was professional and atmosphere was nothing too special.

this place gets 3/5 bunny belly.

IMG_7659

anyways, have a great weekend everyone.
this is exactly how i feel at the moment.

Wurstküche @ Downtown Los Angeles, CA

i loved this place when i visited LA last spring break. one of the best hot dogs ive ever had. it’s located in the arts district and venice beach. they serve exotic sausage sandwiches, belgian fries with homemade dipping sauces, and 24 imported biers on tap.

IMG_1849

some of their exotic hot dogs:

Duck & Bacon with Jalapeño Peppers – juicy and packed with flavor
Alligator (wow really?) & Pork, Andouille Sausage – hickory smoked, thick casing
Rattlesnake & Rabbit with Jalapeño Peppers

my friend had rattlesnake one and he liked it!

i forgot what i had. maybe duck? it was super good!

the fries were so good too! highly recommended!!!!!!

Bondir @ Boston Cambridge, MA

bondir instantly becomes one of my fave restaurants in boston. i was not gonna write a review because i didnt take pictures, but this place is too good to not share with you!
i must say the meal was exquisite. the keyword of this restaurant is ‘details’. from every little decoration of the restaurant, to the food, service, and everything, you can tell they put a lot of heart to every detail.

food was well executed. loved the ambience, cozy, intimate. great service. waiters were extremely knowledgeable, professional, attentive, unpretentious, and friendly.

impressive wine list – 09 St. Urbans-hof, Oekonomierat Nic. Weis, Mosel, Germany / riesling
as good as it gets. smooth, sweet, delicious, superb.

it’s always a good night when the wine is delicious.

instead of appetizers, bondir offers half portions of the entrees. this allows you try more variaty of their dishes.

everything is homemade here and everything is excellent!
we had:

Breads
9 Grain, The Sea, Barley Flour with Hops and Summer Herbs
the sea was awesome, made of seaweed.

Roasted Shallot-Pistachio Tart
Summer Vegetable Mignardises, Rye Berries, Herbs, Sorrel,
Mustard Oil, Toasted Pistachio Powder

Buckwheat Rigatoni
Braised Chicken and Chanterelle Mushroom Ragu with Lavender,
Garlic Scapes, Smoked Scamorza
this was my fave dish. the chicken was amazingly tender.

Scituate Striped Bass
Wax Beans, Roasted Fresh Onion, Guinea Hog Prosciutto,
Burnt Tomato Purée, Bronze Fennel Seed Lavash

Red Wheat Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe
Australian Perigord Truffle, Parmigiano, Fresh Pecorino,
Long Pepper

Lychee Sorbet
